Trying a different direction:

After some discussion, we came to realize that the current story was hard to follow for some of the audience, and thought maybe the plot was too ‘personal’ and wasn’t hitting the right points for everyone’s personal experience.
We found which parts were working, (ex. Feelings of loneliness, feeling different, family) and decided to focus on those points while building a simpler story that would be easier to understand.
We decided there’s a bit too much ‘subtext’ that isn’t really essential to the plot, and makes the film duration a lot longer than necessary

THE CHANGES:

The dad character is leaving the picture, we weren’t really sure if he was completely needed to prove our point and build a family relationship, plus focusing on just daughter and mom character would show a stronger relation
We are Aging down the main character to show more conflict between her and the mother -- pubescent teenager who struggles to understand her mom and sees her as an alien because she’s ‘not like other moms’
No UFO abduction- we figured the UFO is not really serving a strong relation to the story, and relationship between the alien and the main character was still yet to be established with the current plot. Plus there was so much extra work to be done with 3d worldbuilding with that scene alone and wasn’t sure if this was quite manageable
