About the Project
My Mom is an Alien is a short film about an immigrant family settling in Canada. The film features a mix of 2D and 3D animation, the 2D sequences representing the inner thoughts and memories of the main character, while the 3D sequences represent the real world/ the present.
The story centers around Min, a teenage girl who struggles to fit in and accept the cultural differences between her and her school mates, while still struggling to move on from her past life in her home country.
We begin the film with our main character Min grieving on her flight leaving her home country with her mother. As she holds tight to a letter written to her by her friends, tears roll down her face. Her mother puts a hand on her shoulder to comfort her, but when she turns to face her she's transformed to an alien-like creature.
The story focuses on Min being uncomfortable with her food made by her mom until she comes to accept it once again, letting her memories come flooding back from when her and her mom had to adjust to their new life in Canada.
